This month has many Moron's in no specific order: The NCAA, University of Utah's Athletic Director Chris Hill, and the Utah State Legislature (specifically HB477).
Let's get started! Number 1: The NCAA:
It is all about the money! Games on TNT, TBS, TRU TV, and CBS give me a break! What went wrong with one network. I enjoyed the games so much more on CBS. In the past during the games they would take you from one game to the other. Now all they care about is the present game being played. They don't care if one game has 20.8 seconds left and a number 2 seed trails. (Massive upset potential brewing.) Come on!!! What has made this tournament great is all the upsets and being able to watch them live. Now all the NCAA cares about is the money paid by the networks. Each station is hoping they have landed the upset so everyone will change channels to watch! (It's all about the ratings. aka money)
Number 2: University of Utah's Athletic Director Chris Hill:
Firing Jim Boylen two days after the Mountain West Tournament was stupid. He coached for fours years at the U. My thoughts on college coaches is you have to give them 5 to 6 years minimum. Because they don't even get to play with their recruits in their system. The coach is coaching the past coaches players. His coaching record wasn't great but he graduated every senior he ever had. (In my opinion that means more than wins and loses. Because not all are going pro.) Although in 4 short years here he did win the Mountain West Conference and the Mountain West Tournament once. He took his team on to the NCAA's and was national ranked. (Sounds like a loser to me.)
To me it makes no sense to go into the PAC-12 next year without any stability at all! We will have a new coach, new players, and a new system. At least they should have gone in with some stability an establish coach, team, and system. (Good luck in the new conference! I hope the Utes take 13th just to make Chris Hill look stupid.)
Another beef I have with Hill is the buyout clauses added to the contracts and signing them for so long of contracts. Between paying off Giacoletti $800,000 in his 7 year contract (Hill thought Giacoletti was the savior to Utah basketball) and now paying out Boylen $2,000,000 (that is contingent upon him getting another job) and his contract (the Utes signed him to a new contract in 2009 to keep him here until 2014. Hill is learning though he has gone from 7 years contracts to 5 years.) The Utes have spent some serious dough on basketball without any results.
The personal note that make me most outraged is that Jim Boylen would do anything for the fans! This hits very close to home for me. Compare that to Giacoletti and Majerus that is intangible!!! For four year after every single Utah home win Coach Boylen would take my brother Craig into the locker room to meet with the team. I guess character is not a high commodity in coaching at least on Dr. Hill's list!
Number 3: Utah State Legislature (specifically HB 477):
Oh no watch out for the liberal rantings of Michael. (Cameron and Jenny quit smiling!)
Today I will write about checks and balances (now that is a concept) and the people we elect that we think should represent us.
Let's start out with an honest statement. Why would citizens want to know what their government is doing for them? Why is transparency necessary in government? Can power corrupt? How can we overcome these issues? Could government openness help in these issues?
Elder Joseph B Wirthlin said, "Our forefathers believed that we should always know what is going on in government and should do our best to keep it relatively small and dedicated to protecting each of us in the enjoyment of life, liberty, and property." (Random thought here. Would HB 477 have passed if that was spoken from the pulp at General Conference?)
ALWAYS KNOW???? Is that possible??? Not if the Utah State legislature can help it!!!!!!
Seriously do I have to argue why we should have transparency in government? I think all of you are intelligent enough to know the answer. Plus, I am tired from all the ranting. Thanks M
