Boys Trip

For the past three years we have had an annual "boys trip". It started in 2005 when my brother Rich, brother-in-law Dane, my Dad, and myself saw the Green Bay Packers play the San Francisco 49ers in San Francisco. It was great! We really hit it off and the tradition was established.

The following year we extended an invitation to my sister-in-law (Rich's wife) Brittany. That year we went to Chicago to see the Cubs play the Pittsburgh Pirates. (I loved this!! I am the baseball fan of the group.) Followed by a short drive to Green Bay to watch the Packers play the San Diego Chargers. It was the game that Brett Favre tied the all-time touchdowns mark. (He passed an additional touchdown which broke the record, but it was called back on a very questionable call. So in my mind I actually saw him break the record.)

For this year's "boys trip", we went to San Diego to watch the Chargers play the New York Jets on Monday Night Football. It was a blast!! Two variable factors are in each of these trips. One is Brett Favre and the other is my Dad. Brett Favre, how couldn't you love a man who makes his team play better and has every single quarterback record in the NFL? Brett is the only three time MVP: 1995-1997; he led the Packers to seven division titles, 4 NFC Championship games (two championships), and one Superbowl Championship. Brett's personal records include most career touchdown passes, most career passing yards, most career pass completions, most career pass attempts, most career interceptions thrown, most consectutive starts among NFL quarterbacks, and most career victories as a starting quarterback. The two biggest compliments I can give Brett Favre are he plays the game like a kid when in today's game it is treated and played like a business; and he has been able to give me unimaginable memories with the boys.

Now on to what's really important. Variable number two: my dad. Like Brett, Dad has had an amazing career both as a teammate and a player. My Dad has had four MVP's: Michael 1976, Jodi 1977, Richard 1980, and Craig 1988--one more than Favre. He has lead our team to the temple various times and had three championship occasions: Jodi's marriage to Dane in 1999 Michael's marriage to Heather 2004, and Richard's marriage to Brittany in 2005 a few more championship games and victories than Favre. My Dad went to his Superbowl in 1974 when he married my Mom. They have been together for 34 years and counting. As a teammate, he has made his team play better with him at the helm.

Dad's personal records like his buddy Brett's are outstanding, an example of excellence. Although I feel I will do them no justice. A college degree that not only pleased his mom but inspired me to go on to college and graduate. He did all this while working and hanging out with his son in fourth grade. A solid business man with a solid, untarnished reputation. Dad has worked as an appraiser, baseball card collector/dealer, coin collector/dealer, mom's personal yardman/gardener, developer, and loan shark. He has worked to provide for his family through good and bad times in our economy. He has been honest with his fellow man through out this journey. Dad taught his family that if you want a better community, serve in it!! Dad has served as a blood donor, Evergreen Swim and Tennis Club President, and numerous HOA boards (we have all benefited from his service in Oceanside, Cal.) We haven't even discussed his church service. Needless to say his influence on his priests have converted thousands throughout the world. Australia, Chile, New York, Ohio, New Jersey, Virginia, England, Columbia, Venezuela, and Spain just name a few. Maybe, more importantly his influence has kept thousands from leaving the church. Dad has never missed a soccer game, baseball game, swim meet, water polo game, a fraternity function, church talk, baby blessing, etc. As far as consistency, this is better than Brett's consectutive starts and career victories!!! I can't imagine what he will do with all these baby rookies around him. It looks as if he has been infused with new life.
